On November 26, 2011, my moment of teenage freedom came. It came in the form of an already lifted, somewhat sloppy looking 1995 Toyota 4Runner. If you want a little more info:

This thing is more than just a vehicle for me, it’s a friend. It’s been through hell and back, and has literally saved my life. I could not have asked for a better vehicle, and I still don’t think I’ll find another one nearly as good. Unfortunetly, being to hell and back has done it’s damage, and it’s not really up to the task of daily driving anymore. So at the end of this era, I decided to re-review this wonderful, smelly, mismatched, absolutely amazing piece of crap.
Exterior: 7/10
It’s not perfect, but to me, that is even better. It has mismatched panels, it’s been keyed, it has body work done by your’s truly, and it has various flaws around it. I love it’s flaired fenders, and it’s sloping hood. I like the aggressiveness it gives off. The not a care in the world vibe it has is excellent for traffic purposes.
Interior: 5/10
It has one. For the most part, it has held up well. A couple of things don’t work as well as they should, but it’s an abused 20 year old SUV. Not much to say about it.
Driving: 8/10
Amazingly terrible. You do not know what slow car fun means until you drive one of these. It corners surprisingly flat, but you just know if you push it a bit farther you will end up on your side. It’s hilarious.
I could keep reviewing normal things, but do you really care, probably not.
Personality: 20/10
To me, I don’t think there is a more personality filled vehicle in the world. It’s like a young Labrador, incredibly loyal and loves to play. It has been through a river, pulled out a truck from that river, and then continued to be flung through holes and small ponds. Two weeks later it took me 1000 miles from Blairsville, PA to Milton, FL, through a snow storm and tons of rain without a single hick-up. The one major failure it has had, I honestly deserved it. I was being stupid involving it, and it decided to pay me back. This thing has never failed to make me smile, honestly this thing has done more to help my mental health than any anti-depressant ever has. It has saved my life due to that quality. No lie, I’m alive because of this ugly little SUV from Aichi, Japan. It’s just that incredible.
I’m not saying that this SUV is for you, or you should go buy a 4Runner. I’m saying that when you find the right car, you will know. Don’t get rid of it.
On a positive note, it’s not going anywhere. It’s going to slowly be improved, and still be used and abused whenever the chance arises. Hopefully my little Fiesta will be half the vehicle the 4Runner has been. If it can achieve that, I think we’ll get along just fine.

The thing you said about the handling is startlingly true. Yeah, the mileage sucks, but man do they all have personality.

You did a pretty good job capturing the essence of the 2nd gen. They’re awful, but wonderful. I’ve had two, and I often check listings to see if any are around. My only regret was not taking them on more off road adventures.
I miss those glorious turds.

For the “unreliable” generation, they are virtually unkillable.
